The OIE Reference Laboratory for ISA, as part of the OIE Laboratory Twinning Project, provided training for Alicia Millon and Luis Nilo, Visiting Technical Staff from the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, Immunology and Bioinformatics at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Valparaiso, Chile. Alicia and Luis were here for two weeks, June 6-17, 2011, learning and refining their craft in real-time RT-PCR techniques; Dr. Molly Kibenge provided the training.

One June 16, 2011, a group of keen individuals from the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (CCWHC), lead by wildlife pathology resident Dr. Heather Fenton, responded to a report by the Prince Edward Island (PEI) Department of Fisheries of a deceased Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) at North Cape, PEI.  The group included CCWHC technician Fiep de Bie as well as Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) summer students Tricia Flemming and Waylon Wiseman and visiting UNAM veterinarian Alonso Reyes from Mexico.  The crew worked for approximately three hours to dismantle the skeleton and perform a complete post mortem.  Numerous measurements and tissue samples were taken from this 7.5m, adult female Minke in hope of determining a potential cause of death as well as aiding in our understanding of the species and associated diseases.  The students gained an appreciation for the size and amazing adaptations of these animals to life in the ocean during this unprecedented opportunity.

Visiting Profesor from Spain

Dr. Maribel Quiroga, professor of Anatomic Pathology at the Veterinary College, University of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain is spending three months with us at AVC.  The main purpose of her visit is to become familiar with the Canadian academic environment.  During this time,  Dr. Quiroga will be participating in  the daily activities of diagnostic services, for both  domestic animals and fish.   Maribel main areas of interest are __ -- and ___.   Drs, Alfonso Lopez, Gerry Johnson and David Groman are also assisting Maribel in reviewing course contents and archived diangostic material.  Please feel free to come to say hello to Maribel at 407-N.
